What is Astrology?

Astrology is a pseudoscience that has been dated to have stated in the 2nd Millennium BC. It lays claim to divine information and assistance from the planetarium movements and the relative positions of the planets or celestial objects. Astrologers, who are the sign readers rely on knowing the correct areas of the celestial objects among the fixed stars at any given time. They also rely on knowing the exact location of the Zodiac fixed star sign on any point on Earth at any given time.

Using all this information, the Astrologer constructs charts representing these positions. After which he or she put their knowledge into use and analyses (studies) the tables. After which, he or she makes a wide range of conclusions that have been derived from the chart. This pseudoscience is used in understanding an individual and our Karma in life.

Many cultures have attached a lot of importance to Astrology as a means to foretell their future. Such perceptions are of the Chinese, Hindus (Vedic) and Mayans, and there is yet another type of Astrology called the Western astrology, which is found in Central and Western Europe. Astrology has been linked with astronomy, medicine, and meteorology.

Understanding Vedic Astrology or Hindu Astrology

Vedic Astrology is a relatively new term used to describe or represent an ancient concept. The name Vedic came into use in the 1970s; before this, it was referred to as Jyotisha or Jyotishya.

The terms Jyotisha or Jyotishya (jyot meaning light and ish meaning god) stand for the ‘Science of Light.’ It’s a traditional Hindu system of astrology also termed as Hindu astrology. This system was first documented by the guru in the Vedic Scriptures: which are believed to be the oldest records of Indo-Aryan civilization and known as the most sacred texts of India. That contained spiritual knowledge encompassing all aspects of life.

These sacred scriptures referred to Jyotisha (Vedic) as the key to the complete understanding of the soul’s intention for incarnation. Hence, Vedic astrology has been known as the Indian ‘science’ of predicting the future. The Astrologer is referred to as Jyotishi; The dispeller of darkness.

In 1500 BC, a man by the name Parashara; is believed to have founded the art of Vedic Astrology. He was the first individual to cast birth chats for individuals that predicted their health, disease, and longevity of their lives.

But does it astrology foretell the future? This question is a hard one to crack. But some Jyotishi’s claim that during birth, every individual’s life has been pre-determined. That a man follows or lives his life following a particular pattern and this pattern can be determined by astrology. Through the knowledge of the cosmic arrangements at the time of his conception. This is only achieved through meditation and intuitive sightseers.

Vedic astrology relies on the tenet that the actions or deeds of the previous lives determine the present life. All occurrences in our lives are pre-determined by a combination of cosmic positions at the time of conception, birth, and time of the occurrence. Another concept of astrology is Karma. It is believed that just like our journey in life gets determined at our conception. Similarly, the very period we choose to do whatever we can will determine its outcome.

The planetary periods used by the Vedic astrology is referred to as Dasha. These refer to the significant planets based on the moon at the time of birth. These planetary periods provide Vedic astrology with a smooth and comprehensive system for analysis of the full effects of planets throughout our lives. They are the most accurate system through which the planets distribute their results through time and different points in our lives.

The lunar nodes plus the seven significant planets are given periods from 6 to 20 years. A Vedic Astrologer can be accurate in predicting future events through the help of this major period system.

Vedic astrology has higher accuracy in getting its prediction right, and this has been associated with the use of planetary ruling periods which are unique to this system. That is why Vedic astrologers have a much higher ability to tell you about your future, More correctly, what is happening in your life whats going to happen and not just a general comment on your overall self.

Vedic astrology differs from Western astrology by its accuracy and the use of a fixed Zodiac as opposed to the moving Zodiac. Due to the Earths tilting in space on its axis, the relation between the Earth to the sun, Zodiac, rotates at a rate of a little less than 1/60 degrees per year. The movable Zodiac is currently out of alignment with the real star Zodiac by 23 degrees, that represents a whole sign of the Zodiac. That means that the sin sign that people get on newspapers is usually one sign back when we apply the Vedic astrology. However, for those born on the last five days of the month, then they belong to the same sign.

So as seen the basic premise or principles of Vedic astrology is that all things interlink. Your success and your Karma are both pre-determined by a planetary design and occurrences Just like the blooming of flowers which occurs at certain specific times when all conditions are perfect. So is our very existence on this universe we are a soul incarnating in a body at a particular specific time and place and our lives are a reflection of the greater whole into which we are born.

Vedic astrology relies on the critical concept of birth (natal) charts. These charts are a map of the planets in the signs of the Zodiac. They often explain your personality, for avid believers, they do use natal charts to make decisions, and as a tool for self-understanding. They are based upon an exact moment at a precise place on Earth; this represents the moment of birth and the location of delivery. By reading the stars and the map of the heavens, the astrologers claim to know about you.
